Wifi off on laptop

The wifi has switched off on my laptop but is on on my phone, The desk top said a cable is not connected I took out the cables on the modem and plugged then in again The wifi is now on the desktop but I cant even see any wifi symbols etc to say wifi is off
I closed the laptop down and restarted but still no wifi, I am wondering if I should connect the USB cable again and let it load up but I am wary of mucking about with it in case I make it worse. Advice would be appreciated

Make and model of laptop would be handy...
In the absence of a crystal ball, have you tried pressing pressing the wi-fi key on your laptop? You may have accidentally disabled it.
If you need a temporary connection, just connect your laptop to the router with your etehernet (not USB) cable. It's pointless using wi-fi if you are close enough to use ethernet.
If you can hook up to your wi-fi network on your phone, then the issue can only be with the laptop, nowhere else.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Does your laptop have a physical sliding Wireless switch? Usually on the front or down the side.

If not, can you find a wireless symbol on one of the F keys? Uuslaly in blue or some other colour above or below the white keyboard labels. If so, press Fn and press the key.

Or a key with a wireless symbol outside of the keybard?

Otherwise, try this: Press and hold Windows Key > hit 'R'. Type ncpa.cpl

This will bring up the Network adapters on your laptop. Can you see the Wireless one? Is it enabled or disabled? If disabled (grey coloured), double click on it.

If that fails, you may have a driver issue.

Press and hold Windows Key > hit 'R'. Type devmgmt.msc

Under Network adapters, are there any items with a yellow exclamation mark?

Plug the ethernet cable in and you will have a connection without anything else being needed. Then work through the solutions suggested.
Have you looked at the manual to tell you where the wi-fi switch is?

Thanks I am sorted I was going to print off your suggestions from my desk top It was saying printer not ready I had changed the inks so not sure
plugged the USB cable or if this is not what it is called It is the one I had to use to set the wifi up when I got the new printer)) into the laptop it then said press the wifi button and low and behold it is fine The printer is now working on both laptop and desktop and all the icon at the bottom of the laptop are back as before.
Thanks for the info but in the end I didn't get to try your suggestions but can't remember think you are macman you know who you are You were right plug and follow the instructions just press the wifi button. I do appreciate all the advice I get here.
I got a new smart phone and the other night it was stuck not off but nothing would happen. My Son told me to goggle the phone and how to take the back off You tube Nokia 520 which was mine Video got it off and took out the battery put it back and hi presto plugged it in and it worked showed white rectangular white square with a plug showing arrow upwards It then said critical battery low. I felt very happy and proud that I managed to sort it myself. I had contacted Nokia chat and they were hopeless saying it needed repair.
I value the advice I get on here A couple of times when the laptop would not respond first I took out all the cables from the modem then I did the 192.168.1.1 and then I followed the instructions exactly as I had to do for the new modem you all helped me with some weeks ago so I am learning!!! I love my new phone and I went in for a session with a Guru who helped me make it easier to use I wrote down what he told me and it is great !! Wish I had done it years ago Didn't think I would manage the touch screen Email text internet etc
Thanks a million to all of you !!!!
