What to do with disabled tax disc after car is scrapped?

Just scrapped our old car and bought a newer one.

The tax disc was a free disabled one and runs till April 14.

Do I send this back to DVLA?

Also, I need to change the taxation class of the new car to disabled, although it already has a tax disc till March 14.

How do I go about this?

Or go post office and get it changed now with a refund for the existing tax disc.

    Saves time later.

I didn't pay for the original tax disc though. So obviously couldn't get a refund on it.

Can I still take the old tax disc back to the Post Office and change the taxation class there?

I meant get a refund on the new cars tax disc after registering it for the free one.

You will get a refund on whatevers left over on the newer cars tax disc.

    Better in your pocket.
  • You can change the taxation class at a Post Office. You will need the V5 and one of the following

Your exemption certificate must be one of the following:
    • certificate of entitlement for DLA
    • statement of entitlement for PIP
    • annual certificate of entitlement
    • DLA404
    • MHS330
    • WPA0442
They can then issue you a disc. They cannot issue a refund for the existing disc at the counter. Once you apply for a new disc, it will overwrite your old one and make it void so you wont be able to claim a refund.

The tax disc on the new car is not exempted, therefore it has 3 months of value on it that can be refunded once the new car has been registered and exempted.

Obviously the tax disc for the previous car, that was exempt is null and void.

Hopefully that explains my post better.

Thanks, I get it now! I'll take it in on Monday.
  • I dont think they can get a refund for the existing disc on the new car once they have applied for the new disc as disabled as you cannot have two discs valid for a car at the same time.

If they apply for a tax disc as disabled at the PO counter then fill out the form and send the 'value' disc off, DVLA will see that they have two discs and only the newer disabled free disc will be valid

Thats the way I have always thought of it and I have worked for the PO. I have never worked for DVLA though so could be wrong. Might be worth calling them first.

You havent paid for the existing disc on the new car so its a bonus if you get the refund IMO

  • The disability exemption tax disk is in fact a reflection of your VEC [vehicle exemption certificate] and can apply to any one vehicle at any one time.

.1. The newly purchased private class vehicle can have the remaining value redeemed in 12/12th's and should be claimed at the earliest opportunity, using even any one single day of any new month will lose you that one 12th of a year. In this case a 4 month monetary refund is due.

.2. The tax exempt old [disabled] car can have its tax exempt disk transferred to a new vehicle at any point in any month in full and will lose no months, put simply a full 12 months VED disk will be issued immediately.

.3. The transfer of documents and ownership and exemption will usually take place all at the same time providing you present all docs in full. The most critical of which is the exemption certificate now called the CofE [Certificate of Exemption].
