An electric fire is an alternative heating system.

A single electric fire cannot be considered a viable way to heat an entire property. I'd also guess that the fire didn't come from the landlord, from the way it's worded, although I could be wrong.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

One has to speculate as to what penalty the tenant would have received, had they survived?
I'm not absolving the LL of her responsibilities, I'm just curious as to the specific GSC remit.

Apologies then..i must clean my readers....
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

As the installation appears to have been poor from the off & a letting agency had a gas safety check done I'd have wanted to know whether the check reported hazards & if so whhether this was conveyed to the landlord.

If yes the book should have been thrown at her. If yes to hazards but she wan't conveyed it ought to have been thrown at the letting agent. Engaged or not they surely had a moral duty to report any such hazard to her.

Assuming that she didn't know of the fault(s) however then I don't think she has got off that lightly. Ignorance may not be a defence but she has to live with whats happened, has a suspended sentence a huge fine & costs bill to worry about, particularly given that she is said to be on benefits and at the end of the day it was this idiot reconnecting a boiler he knew to be dangerous that caused his death not her failing to have it inspected.

I wonder why the tenant wouldnt tell the landlord they have no heating..as we are being told. What was the problem? presumably his partner may cast some light on it. I know if i were renting a place and the heating packed up, i would ring the landlord and report it asap.
