Kindle or Tablet?

I'm flying alone on a long haul flight in a few weeks. This will involve a few hours waiting for a connecting flight.

I thought a Kindle would be useful. T****o have the original for £49 and the paper white for £109.
Is there really a £50 difference between them?

If so then rather than getting the paper white would I be better paying more for a tablet that would be more versatile?

I've never used a Kindle or a tablet so I'm looking for others' experiences.

I have searched the forum but I don't think my specific question has been asked before-apologies if it has.

Thanks for any advice.

No, not really. It's more like £60 ;)

you can also get a certified refurb paperwhite direct from amazon for about £85, with a 12 month warranty, as to is the paperwhite worth it, as ever it depends on how you plan on using it, as all you get extra is a light, which unless you read at night is not really a useful extra especially for the cost

as to which is better between a kindle or a tablet again it all depends on what you want it for, a kindle is better for reading, so if you do plan on reading a lot then that's what I would get, if reading is only part of what you want then of course a tablet will be better

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Amazon are selling the new Kindle Fire HD at the moment for £119, so you could have both.

  • Amazon had the original kindle fire HD for £99 last weekend, and I think Argos still have it at that price.

  • If you are interested in buying a tablet, you should watch the latest episode of BBC click. In that episode they review the latest tablets from different manufacturers. If you catch up on that episode on iPlayer and start watching from 13:30.

The Kindle Fire HD is a tablet, like an iPad etc, it's not an eReader.

OP, what do you want to be able to do with this gadget? If you want to read on it, get an eReader (personally I really like the look of the Kindle Paperwhite, sadly I can't justify spending money on one as I have an iPad). If you want to watch things, play games, use the internet then get a tablet.

    Think about battery life.
A tablet will realistically give you a maximum of 5-6 hours but a kindle will give you 15-20 hours between charges.

Worth bearing in mind for flights. Flight time may be 4-5 hours but airport waiting times, travel each end, etc are the reasons I wouldn't be without a kindle - despite having the kindle app on my tablet.

Thanks. I'm wanting it primarily for reading when travelling. I like to read when on a train or plane. If I'm travelling by car then obviously I don't read! but will take my laptop and books. But I'm fed up with carrying heavy books.
I was also thinking it might be nice to watch some DVD's on the flight.

Thanks battery life is an important consideration. Basically, I'll be spending almost a full day travelling ( 18 hours on flights plus about 5 hours in airports) I think a Kindle would have enough battery life but not a tablet (although I believe it's possible to charge them on the plane?)

I'll probably sleep for a few hours but don't want to spend all day reading. I know there are films showing on the flights but these wouldn't necessarily be my choice, so I thought I could catch up with a lot of my favourite TV programmes.

I already have a laptop so I don't need a tablet but they seem so convenient when I've seen other travellers with them. I had a short break in Rome recently and the person sitting next to me was reading her Kindle and another couple were looking at their photos on an Ipad-and there was me with my cumbersome book!

What a pity Santa never comes to my house anymore!
