Drip coming through ceiling light

My downstairs neighbours told me(their upstairs neighbour) they have a drip coming through their ceiling light.

I checked my central heating pipes in the room above and there was a hole in one of the pipes which has now been fixed.

Unfortunately while it was being fixed their ceiling light fell onto the bed. I know how dangerous this could have been, doesn;t bear thinking about.

Six hours later they still report a drip, can anyone tell me if it is just the gather of water which needs to be released and that is why it is still dripping?

I will get their ceiling sorted and their light fixed back onto the ceiling (properly this time) as I feel it may not have been fixed onto joist/beams before this happened.

What else can I do to make amends with my neighbours? any suggestions.
Looking forward to the day I have nothing left to list on eBay

Legally you probably do not need to make amends to your neighboor, morally you may well feel obliged
  • They are being very good about it all, as accidents do happen, but feel their patience is wearing a bit thin.

I have mended the leak, but they still have a drip?

I still think it may be a gather of water that needs to be released somewhere through their roof?

By this, do you mean I do not even have to get their ceiling painted and light put back on the ceiling? or

Just not make amends with them?

The law regarding this is fairly sensible in that it would make you liable (Financially responsible) if you could have "reasonably" avoided the damage.

If you had a pipe that leaked, you would generally not be liable unless you did not take (Reasonable) steps to fix it eg if the neighboor had informed you of the leak and you did nothing.

If the neighboor decided to take you to court it would be him that would have to prove you were negligent (Liable).

So basically the law accepts accidents will happen, if the actions of a "reasonable" man could have avoided them eg the consequences were reasonably obvious a court may find liability otherwise a court would just say it was an accident or an act of god
  • All sorted now, turns out they have insurance cover for electrics so got someone out who put in a ceiling rose for them and even included a bulb.

Also fixed their outside light - needed a bulb, and checked all fuses, plugs and light switches.

and the ceiling dried up just fine. Whew !!!

    Oh dear !!!!

My neighbours have just informed me they have contacted their insurers, had someone out to assess damage.

I'm just a bit worried I may be presented with a bill ?????1

Anybody have any thoughts or advice on what happens when insurers involved??
