Off peak hours. Any ideas?

Options
Hello, I am hoping someone may be able to tell me what (if any) my off peak hours are on my British Gas electricity tariff?
I've searched high and low on the BG site but no luck.
I'm on Fix and fall Nov 2014 with energy smart. (Still waiting for my energy thingy to be delivered so trying to spend as little money as possible on electric :-)
Thanks in advance.
Sam

It depends where you live and what sort of metering you've got. Some with inbuilt or external time clocks might be running either slow or fast (especially if you had a few long power outages) - some can be hours out. Some are remote switched by the power distribution company so again might not exactly line up with the published times. You should be able to see from your tariff (look at the BG tariff for your location) or from your DNO (Distribution Network Operator when it's supposed to switch.
Don't forget as well that the switching time might change by an hour when the clocks go backwards or forwards depending whether the switch is done by a local timer or the DNO
The only sure way to know is by going out and checking the meter to find out exactly when it switches.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Thank you, I'll go and have a look at it to see if it switches :-)
  • I dont think any of the suppliers will commit themselves to naming specific hours that anyones individual 7 hours off peak will be. Here in S.
Yorks its 12.30 to 7.30 gmt, 1.30 to 8.30 bst. It depends on if the timer switch is accurate. Radio Teleswitch I expect to be accurate, but the old analogue ones (with a circular 24 hour dial) could be so far out that your cheap 7 hours will come in at anywhere in the 24 hours. the only way to see when yours are is to monitor when the low rate is active
  • I live in a small block of 9 flats and we have a meter cupboard in the hallway. Had a look at it and it just displays the meter reading as far as I can see. No buttons on it at all. Think I may have to ring BG tomorrow.

do you have electric storage heaters, and are you on an E7 tariff?

If not then I doubt you will get any off peak hours.
  • No, no storage heaters.
Have been onto BG live chat and apparently I have a single rate meter so no off peak.
Thanks for everyone taking the time to read and respond.

Sounds like you ve got a digital scrolling meter. it scrolls round r1,r2, and T for total and a display of 88888. The active rate will be shown by either a curser blinking under the reading or the reading blinking, so if you view it in the daytime hours up to midnight the day rate will be indicated usually ,( but not always), it will be r1 day, r2 night. They are the only two reads of interest. sometimes tho, people have requested single rate billing, so then its the total reading you would use

BG wouldn't control your timeswitch even if you did have E7. It's down to the local DNO, not your supplier.
What made you think you had any cheap rate period?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
