Thanks all for your replies, really appreciate them.
Sounds like I'll have to look into this a lot more & then sit down with him & go through things together when we are able to do so.
Does any award apply from the day you fill in / return the forms?

When you request the forms, there is date stamped on the front. You need to return the forms by that date. If not, your form will still be considered, but the payments would only start from when the decision is made, not from when you first apply.
Your husband may also be asked to attend a medical.
It is important to remember that PIP is based on care and/or mobility needs, and not the actual diagnosis, so please don't worry that it took a while to diagnose. Be clear about what help he needs, how often, and how long it takes. It might be useful to keep a diary of all help needed for a few weeks, as this can clarify exactly what his needs are - this can include prompting to do things, as well as physical help. A diary can also show the fluctuations in your husband's condition, and show how often he has worse days. This can be helpful in gaining the correct award, if an award is due.0
