There are all these internet rumours about Prius battery problems

But the only widespread confirmed issue was among the number or 10 and 11 yr old mk1 Prius imported from Japan a few years ago which had battery issues due to being parked up for so long in the Japanese Import system and months at sea when being shipped over

The biggest issue with the Prius in this case is only the very latest ones are available
    as an estate/mpv

The battery packs themselves have also been improved over the years and even when there is a failure there are plenty of cheapish used ones from low mileage write offs.

VW Group have a good range of economical engines, the 1.2 tsi has good official mpg and emissions while the turbo gives it quite a lot of oomph. The Octavia Estate has got very good reviews or I really like the SEAT Altea and Altea XL. The Skoda Yeti also gives you a lot of space or the value packed Skoda Roomster (the Scout trim gives it more of a 4x4 look than a van) offers a hell of a lot of boot space for your pound. If you're definitely set on an estate and the Octavia isn't big enough, then the Skoda Superb has a lot of executive features as standard and an enormous tailgate; I know a mobile DJ who loves the drive while still getting all his kit in.
