Will Tesco credit card charge for a negative/minus balance?

I have a Tesco credit card and due to a refund, I have a minus credit of around £100.

Does anyone know if Tesco will apply any charges for being in negative credit? I'm currently overseas for several months so haven't been using the card so that I avoid overseas transaction fees. I've looked online but can't find anything and don't have access to the original terms and conditions as they are in storage back in the UK. I'm wondering if it would be better to buy something here in Australia and pay the overseas transaction fee if Tesco will charge for a negative balance.

I couldn't find an email address or online chat for Tesco either to contact them, which would be preferable to an expensive call to the UK!!

Any advice/previous experience would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Generally you should not keep a CC in a negative balance as technically, it is a breach of the T&C. When this happens the CC may send you a cheque or refund by other means.

In your case as it was due to a refund from a merchant, it is probably best to buy something in order to bring the account to zero or a positive balance.

I don't think Tesco will charge you for the negative balance.
You may question anything I say. Just be polite, otherwise you go straight on to my Ignore List, which funds a good old fashioned knees-up every Xmas. Cheers;)

I often have a negative balance on my tescos card - one time I had over a grand for six weeks or so.

They never complained nor charged me. Although they did make me jump through extra security hoops when I requested the money be transferred to my bank account.

don't worry about it. they won't charge you.
if it is your usual spending card, then just keep using it.

I expect you might have complained if your money was stolen or used fradulently and their insurance didn't pay out.
My belief is they don't insure your money only their own, but I wouldn't like to be the first test case.
  • Thank you all for your replies, sounds very positive!
  • You definitely won't be charged.

You can either spend it (but yeah you'll get the 2.75% foreign transaction fee) or just leave it there until it's convenient to give them a call and get the credit balance refund, they'll be able to send it to any nominated account provided you pass full security.
