My local estate agent is trying to push me to sell to a guy who is very interested in my property ,but his offer is very low ,if I told them that I had been given an offer by another agent which was higher ,would they know It wasnt true ? could they ring the other agent and find out ?

Does your local agent have a sole agency contract with you?
You don't have to sell if you think the price is too low, indeed you don't have to sell if someone offers you a million if you don't like the buyer
It's best to be honest, tell your agent that you will not accept any offers below what you have stated.

They might well be able to find out from the other agent, it depends how good their networking is in your local area - where I live (small market town) all the agents seem to know each other pretty well.
But that's not really the point - if you feel the offer is too low for you to accept, you should be able to tell the agent this without having to resort to subterfuge. The sooner you sell, the sooner they get paid; but most agents ought to be sympathetic to a vendor's wish to get the best price they can for their property.
Before I even instructed agents, I told them what my 'ideal' price would be for us to achieve on our property. I thought that would give them a fair idea that if an offer was too massively below this, we'd be unlikely to accept. But of course we also had to factor in what the local market was doing and our own circumstances in terms of how quickly we wanted to move.
There must be a reason why you feel the offer is too low (similar properties being sold for more, for example) - it's worth explaining your reasons to the agent. Try and make it into a collaboration, where you're working towards the same ends - you want to achieve a particular price, if they can help you get that price, then you win and they win!0 -

No its not sole agency and they set the valuation,which was lower than all the others I had round ,to be honest I feel they have never been "on my side" more towards the buyer as they always had something negative to say when conducting viewings ,the only reason I am still with then is that their comm is little lower than the other agents ,I did already say that I had an offer .. now I will feel like a fool if they find out

I'd tell the agent that as you're the one paying them, not the purchaser, then they should channel their efforts into getting you a better offer!! Cheeky wotsits!0 -
Don't feel foolish - they shouldn't have been putting such pressure on you that you felt you had to 'back up' your reason for not selling at such a low price.0

I used Dexters in Richmond a year ago to sell a property, who were almost 1% cheaper than the other local agents, and they were on the phone within two weeks badgering me constantly to cut my price. In the end, I took it off them and sold it through a different agent a year later for 40% more than these cut price agents could muster.
My advice would be to take it of your current EA’s and put it on with some one else a week or two later.0 -
People who work in the same business tend to know eachother. Even though they are not supposed to swap confidential information, it happens. So don't lie.
Why not just tell your EA the truth (that the offer is not high enough)? The EA works FOR YOU - so it's up to them to get you the best possible deal. Not for the EA to persuade you to accept a low offer - unless the EA thinks that this is the best offer you are likely to get.
Are you realistic about the price that the property can achieve?
