More evidence that double digit wage rises are back :(

Perhaps they have a final salary pension scheme and are worried about losing their job in 18 months time?

I know which two digits this will get from most of the public.
I think....

with the 'about to boom economy' I'm sure they will have no problem getting new jobs
  • The rise is due after the 2015 general election, taking pay to £74,000.

Can't see why they didn't round it up to £75K.

Hey be fair, it's not all gravy
The changes would also see a £15 dinner allowance and claims for tea and biscuits scrapped. It would also mean taxpayer-funded taxis were only allowed after 23:00.

Well in the interest of balance, the increase will no go through until the next parliament. Pay was increased to its current level in 2010 - so by the time this goes through MPs will have had no payrise for 5 years. It is roughly equivalent to getting 2% per annum (if they get reelected of course). If you don't think your MP deserves a payrise then don't vote them back in.

    We have too many MPs.
A lot of legislation comes from Europe anyway.

If we reduced the number to 2/3rds we could easily afford pay increases.

Then there's the issue of support staff. Force MPs to recruit from an open labour pool rather than wives and girlfriends (and boyfriends and sometimes all 3!). This will increase their capability and strengthen our argument to reduce the number of MPs down to 1/2. :)

it's not entirely clear how increasing the number of voters per MP will enhance democracy or accountability

We demand efficiency of labour through modernisation in every other walk of life nowadays. So why not politics?

A small example. MPs can access their notes almost anywhere nowadays by telecommuting. Such a concept would have been unthinkable 50 years ago.

Writing legislation from Europe has made things less accountable if you ask me.

My local MP is great and deserves a rise. It's everyone else's MP that I don't want to have a payrise. Unfortunately I have no influence over their rise.

In all seriousness, I have no problem with their having a payrise, but I think part of it should be performance related as it would be in many other jobs with a similar salary. Those targets should not be related to party metrics, but others such as answering correspondence from their constituents and holding sufficient surgeries, maybe turning up for x number of sessions per year. We all know that there are MPs that don't achieve this, so they should be hit in the pocket. The metrics may need some finessing - I don't know what would be appropriate - it's more about the concept.

  • MPs have oodles of opportunity to earn extra in other jobs. A glance at the "members' interests" would confirm that they are generally earning lucratives crusts elsewhere.

Not to mention the odd brown envelope... lobbying and all that... know what I mean... sniff... not a word to anyone... and ultimately the 'retirement' once one has collected the required 11 or 12 directorships.....
