best value quality dried dog / cat food?

Hi.

Quality is more important then the price - don't want a cheap, high soy content food that will have my boys pooping loads and eating twice the volume of a better quality food.

But I don't want to be paying for the advertising budget / snobbery value of a big brand either.

I usually buy purina for the cats, burns, or k9 for the dogs.

Dogs will eat scraps as well as the dried. Cats rarely eat human food.

Any ideas?

one of our bengal cats is on her 2nd bag of porta 21 senior/weight control. she loves them, she's losing weight (slow & steady) & her coat is now so glossy & smooth. pretty economical too. i buy the 10kg bag & store it in one of these which really keeps it fresh (the porta biscuits are quite small so i think they'd actually fit in the next size down of that container, but i wasn't sure so thought it better to go for the 12kg capacity one).
  • Burns has quite a lot of rice for the money. Skinners Field and Trial, the duck or salmon, are the cheapest hypo-allergenics on the market to my knowledge. Round about £25 and free delivery per sack. Not bad at all. Personally I like Arden Grange as a middle of the road one, got a handy local stockist who does free delivery too.

Mine eat raw, but I use kibble as treats on walks etc so I do buy it from time to time. Where do you normally buy food from? Online, in store? Pets At Home's own brand (Wainwrights) do some good dry foods too.

Poor quality ones are (sadly) usually found in supermarkets and are the likes of Purina, Bakers, Pedigree. You can usually get free delivery with most online if you buy a couple of sacks at a time.

To get the best of the best like Orijen/Acana/Taste of the Wild you do pay a fair bit but they are the best on paper. If I didn't feed raw I'd probably give part wet part dry but still soak the dry. One of mine always had digestion issues on dry.

I put down 50g a day of dry Eden to compliment their NI raw breakfast and dinner.

For dog food. Simpsons is really good. They do grain free and an 80/20 food with fantastic ingredients. They also do food with grains

Obviously if there's an unlimited budget, Origen all around. But it's a hefty price tag.
