Idiot pays £450 for a photo of an Xbox on Ebay.

http://www.nottinghampost.com/Nottingham-teenager-gets-450-refund-buying-photo/story-20267041-detail/story.html

So seller lists a photo of an Xbox. Assuming he words it so someone reading it quickly thinks they are actually getting an Xbox. Buyer bids £450 and £8 postage. Receives a photo of an Xbox with "Thank You For Your Purchase" on the back. Goes to local newspaper who runs a story. Ebay gets seller to refund him and bans him.

Bit cheeky of the seller and I am assuming he never dreamed he would net £450 for it but if I pay £2 for an item I read the listing in full. If I was spending £450 on an item I would make sure I read every word in the listing at least twice.

I know everyone makes mistakes on Ebay and I have made plenty. I fail to understand how someone can see it says you get a photo of an Xbox yet pays £450 as it is in the video game category.

  • Couldn't agree more! It said photo, he was unsure, why risk all his savings? Plus the article mentions a little kid for sympathy. The kid probably doesn't even care about having an xbox one.

I was going to post exactly the same yesterday when I read the story but my window got closed that I was typing in and I couldn't be bothered to retype it lol.

Obviously stupid "it said photo but i didn't think it would be" said the 19 year old father of a 4 year old (chav).

He could have opened a SNAD - anyway. That wasn't a photo - it was a printed picture with lines across.

I thought that, but I suppose they could argue it was a digital photo and they didn't state what it would be printed out on. Although for that price the guy deserved a decent photo lol. Considering how much he was overcharged on P&P as well the seller could have thrown in a nice photo frame too :p

I have zero sympathy for the gormless chav.

These sort of XBox box scams have been doing the rounds on Ebay for years - their sole purpose is to deceive and scam. I note the article says this was listed under 'video games and consoles'.

Anyone running this sort of scam - particularly at this time of year, deserves the book thrown at them. Calling it 'a bit cheeky' is a massive understatement - this was fraud attempt, pure and simple.

Buyers do need to be protected against this sort of thing.

Items are listed under wrong categories all the time. The listing stated photo.

Oh come on. Do you honestly believe this was a purely innocent listing?

The intent of this listing is obvious and the buyer does not deserve to lose that money, and the seller certainly has no right to it.

It concerns me people here are defending the indefensible. This listing was the work of a con artist.

No. But how stupid do you have to be to see the word photo, be really unsure and still part with over £400 of your savings?

The seller stated exactly what the item was, that wasn't misleading at all. Sure it was in the wrong category but many things are. You wouldn't assume they're something else because of it so why I assume a photo will magically become a games console?

The seller didn't force the buyer to bid, nevermind bid so much. It was entirely the buyers choice.

There are sellers out there who put up misleading listings. Ones that don't state photo and are under the wrong category and ones where the boxes/cases are empty and it doesn't state they are. Them listings should not be allowed. No doubt about it, they are scams.

This is some idiot who spent all his savings on what he thought would be a photo, went to the newspaper and then claimed it was all for his little kid.

The seller, while he should never have done such a listing, did send the guy the item he'd stated he would.

I am not saying the seller is right - he's not - but in this case it was the buyer who was being stupid and he should have known better.

When I first saw this on Yahoo homepage with the 'I was buying it for my 4 year old and can't afford another' the word scam came to mind. Did this person really 'fall' for this? No doubt he will get one given to him by Currys or some other shop looking for publicity. How do we know he wasn't 'in' on the original Ebay listing.

Bit shocked that so many of you think that this kind of scam is fair game and it's the buyers fault for falling for it, however stupid or foolish you think they are.

This is a scam, regardless of the listing category etc.

It would be a sad day if we all had to scour Ebay listings just in case its a 'cheeky' (read con-artist) seller trying to pull a fast one.
It's not clever or 'fair game' - its just dishonest.

This does nothing for EBay's reputation as a safe place to buy goods.
