How do I reduce that number, and how do I know what is safe to turn off?
I clicked on the black viper link mentioned in another thread, but the site is under construction - so over to you.
My laptop does take a while to do things.

You can check out which ones are needed here http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
Click the letter each one starts with and scroll down till you find it. The list will recommend what to do with them. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

It was me that posted the BlackViper guide but as mentioned it currently under construction. Hope it appears again as between that and your link, we'll have more of an idea of what is needed and what we can do without.
I only have 22 processes running but it is difficult to say what is needed and what isn't as different people have different needs.
Remember that most programmes you install they mostly want to place themselves in startup and/or the systemtray. Most common ones are WinZip Tray, Nero, EpsonAgent, ATI, Windows Messenger, etc.0 -
Bliddy Ell, I turned 2 off, and now I have 52 running!
Most of mine are due to spyware, anti virus and firewalls etc, which I use all the time I am online - which is pretty much all I use the laptop for to be fair.
I shall have to sit down and go through them all and be ruthless I think.
Thanks for the help."It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that, I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin'."

I'm probably poking my nose in where it's not wanted but 'Control Alt Delete' all at the same time will show everything thats running at once.
You can 'End Task' on as many as you like to see what effects it has(They will return on Boot-up) before going to the Start;Run:msconfig;- route to permanently stop them.

Try https://www.winpatrol.com
If you upgrade to the PLUS version it gives assistance on what processes can be stopped. Also good for clearing up the programs that load on start upFiliss0 -
Easiest way: stick the process name into google and check a few pages on each.
First, though, scan with:
Adaware, Crap Cleaner and Spybot Search & Destroy to kill off any spyware on your computer. Crap Cleaner will also get rid of some other unneeded crap on your hd, which is nice.Scott0 -
If it's any help you can still access the BlackViper website here http://web.archive.org/web/20041123023227/www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
I have been using the "safe" configuration for some time now without any problems......28 processes running(including zone alarm, AVG, MS antispyware, cookiewall amongst others). I would also recommend winpatrol for preventing unwanted progs /services from loading at startup.l0
