Phone Doesn't Re-Connect to Network

I have a very poor signal at home, so I have to accept that I frequently lose the connection. However my phone seems very reluctant to re-connect. In order to make the reconnection I have to change the network setting from GSM only to GSM auto (PRL) or vice versa. Having been given a kick up the ****, the phone re-connects, often with 3 or 4 bars of signal strength, and stays connected until I move to another part of the house.
Some days I don't notice the phone has disconnected until I see that the battery has gone down very quickly and the phone is very warm (presumably the phone is gobbling up power trying to find a signal).
Do you think this is down to the network or the handset? I have a HTC Sensation on Vodafone.
All the providers have a poor signal in this area so although EE make more ambitious claims I'm reluctant to go to the trouble of changing if it's not really going to work.

Not sure on the costs though.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I used to have an HTC Desire-C which did exactly the same thing. I usually had to go into airplane mode to regain a signal, sometimes it needed a reboot.
It can be caused by a duff SIM card (or dirty contacts on it) as the phone has to access the SIM card each time it re-connects to a network. However, if you can always reconnect using GSM on/off, it suggest a phone fault. I seem to remember there are various threads about it on the HTC support forums.

That sounds quite similar to mine, and I found a couple of threads on the HTC forum that also seemed similar. They mostly talked about needing to switch off and on again, but perhaps they hadn't discovered the network settings bit of things.
It does look as though it may well be a phone problem so I think I'll look into replacing it. Perhaps now is the time to upgrade to 4G.0
