uPVC French Doors

Options
Hi

Im planning a kitchen renovation and would like to put in a set of uPVC french doors. Ive had a look on the Wickes website and they seem to supply in standard 4ft, 5ft and 6ft widths. Does anyone know if this measurement is for the whole unit (i.e. inc. frame) or just the doors themselves? And if its just the doors, how much extra do I need to allow for the frame when measuring for the gap to fit the doors into?

Any help much appreciated

It will be for the whole unit size including frame.
Take a look at their www site for more info on frame dimensions and even a leaflet on how to fit them.

Thanks very much for the reply. I'll go look for this leaflet now.......
  • Hi there

I am the manager of a factory that produces PVC French doors.

Firstly, that size is DEFINITELY the whole frame size.
Secondly, the old adage 'You get what you pay for', is certainly relevant here.

The materials are substandard to that of dedicated PVC manufacturers like us. We are a highly succesful company, based 1 mile away from a Wickes store. 99% of the builders that buy from here wouldn't even contemplate buying a set of French Doors from Wickes.

My advice would be to go to a friends house and look at the quality and thickness of their PVC doors and windows, and then compare to Wickes standard and quality.

    SAY NO MORE.

    Hope this helps.

With due regard for the above poster and his post, I would also suggest that, depending on his budget, the OP looks at B and Q. They have french doors at £199.

Admittedly they are not nearly as good as the £650 set I had made to measure for my unusual opening size, and they didn't come with leaded panes, like mine did, but then it all depands on how much cash the OP can spare/justify.

Having said that I have a B and Q back door to our property at the moment. It will come out soon but not because we are not happy with it, there has been a change of direction on the redevelopment. It has the 5 point locking system, comes supplied with the cill etc and is even preglazed. It has 2 hinges as opposed to 3 but there is a middle bolt that ties into a bracket that resists break ins by forcing the door on the middle of the hinged side.

For the money (£150 at the time) we certainy could not complain about the quality. They now sell four around £100.

And, yes - you do get what you pay for.

  • I have just fitted a set of wickes french doors and am suitably impressed at the quality versus price.Fitted correctly there is nothing wrong with these doors!!
