Are there any experts out there who know if there are grants or incentives available to replace a very aged oil fired central boiler with a wood/log/chip fired system. I keep hearing if deals but can never find them without being on benefits.
Thanks in advance

I don't think this grant was available when we changed our boiler, otherwise I'd have taken advantage of it but if it's any help to the OP we were in the same position as you with a 27 year old boiler.
Our installer recommended a condensing boiler as Mark - MC has and we are very happy with how it works. It's certainly more cost efficient then the one it replaced and it burns a lot cleaner - the only thing it really emits is steam. The memsahib had ours moved outside from the utility room and that makes the house quieter too.
We have had problems with sludge however. Less so when the boiler was changed than when we had the bathroom replaced several weeks ago. We're now in the position where we need a power flush and that's going to cost £300 upwards. We're able to positively identify the radiators which have the problem because they're cold at the bottom and overall aren't as hot as some of the others in the house.
We've also been warned that the power flush itself could show up faults in the system such as bad joints in the pipework, faulty valves or even radiators which might spring a leak so we have to prepare ourselves for the extra costs the power flush might reveal.
This is all because there was no additive in our system. So when we have got over this particular hump we're going to make sure the plumber does the header tank with a good solution.
Best of luck getting your new boiler installed. Well worthwhile ultimately.
