Is this a TalkTalk scam?

Options
This is a new one on me.

Received a letter from them today, addressed to me saying confirmation of the set up of direct debit instruction. My name and address were correct but the bank a/c no. and sort code of someone else. I traced the sort code to HSBC in London.

Has anyone else had this?

Do you have any dealings with TalkTalk?
If so it could just be a computer glitch - the best thing to do would be to contact them directly and tell them what has happened so that they can determine if it is a problem of theirs and sort it out.

    It states:
If any of the above details are incorrect please call our customer services team on (a number which charges for calls).

I don't want to pay them money for their scam/mistake. But thanks anyway.

Try http://www.saynoto0870.com to find a local rate or freephone number for them.
  • If you are a Talktalk customer, login to your on-line account and use the "Contact Us" links. I agree with you - you should not have to pay for the call to see if they have made a mistake.

That could be a foolhardy mistake. If someone's using your identity to order the latest iphone 5s and run up enormous bills they neglect to pay, it's going to be you that the debt collectors come after.

Use saynoto0870.com to try to find a cheaper number or phone an 0800 sales line if they have one, but even if it costs, you need to talk to someone.

    What is the number?
    It's someone else's fault.

Right, I knew what was going to happen which is why I raised the query. A 40 minutes phonecall.

I phoned up an 0800 number so hopefully I won't be making them even richer. I spoke to one girl with whom I spoke slowly, clearly and concisely and had to repeat everything because she wasn't lstening properly. She then said she had to transfer me to another dept. This girl I could barely understand from the thick US accent. I went through the same procedure. She then transfered me to a guy with a thick accent who I couldn't understand properly.

Someone used another email to order online in my name so they have cancelled everything.

What I can't understand is why order in my name, using another sort code and bank a/c no.

Anyway, here's another scam to watch out for.

    Thanks to all.
