building work at hotel -help needed please

Hi, quick question, hope someone can help before we go to the travel agent
We are away in feb and basically have just paid our balance about 2/3 weeks ago.
We have now received a letter, advising that building works are taking place with the refurbishment of one pool and its surrounding areas, will be closed off with the use of light machinery, so there may be some noise heard at times. Rooms apparently will be allocated away from area, but work taking place daily from 0900 to 1700.
The works will last from January to March.
Am really not happy with this, we booked the hotel a fair while back, almost upon our return from there last year. This was the pool which we used last year and was in the area of our room and met all our expectations, with the reception, al la cartes, all was in an area which was easily walkable unlike some of the other pools.
Is this something that we now have no control over and have to go? We booked through a mainstream and well known tour operator. We go on holidays for peace and quiet and not to hear machinery whether light or not.
Friends have booked the same hotel via a smaller independant travel company were offered:the opportunity to stay there regardless, the change of the booking to a different hotel, with more money to be paid or a full refund.
Is this something we should have put to us, and the opportunity to change to a hotel where where we will get what we want when initially booked the hotel.
Holiday company has got atol and abta symbols
Is there anyone who can offer some guidance?
Thanks x

Hiya, we are going to see them early afternoon, but just wanted an idea as to what they should/could offer as an alternative really dont want to spend two weeks with machinery, no matter really how light, thats not what we wanted when booked the holiday0 -

Hi,
Depending on how bad the building work is the tour operator does not have to offer you an alternative. If however you were very unhappy and the building work was going to ruin your holiday then the tour operator can offer you an alternative. If you are not happy with the alternative you can look for your own but will have to pay the difference in cost if more, if cheaper you will get a refund.
I hope you managed to get something sorted0 -
