Hi I am almost divorced and will re mortgage and the property will be transferred to my name. I am getting quotes around £5-600. This seems expensive to remove one persons name from the house?? Has anyone found a cheaper way? Thanks x

Are you taking over/increasing the existing mortgage?

If a new mortgage, the lender will want effectively a complete conveyancing process before taking on the risk.

If there were no mortgage involved, you could DIY the transfer of name on the Title, but as it is......

As always, shop around and compare quotes carefully:

No. That's about the going rate for a "one off" transfer of equity.

You might get slightly cheaper in some parts of the country, but when asked I normally say £450 to £600.

  • When I got divorced, my exH agreed to come off the mortgage. I cost about £400 +VAT. I paid this fee as well as partially buying him out of the mortgage... there is also a "Charge" on the property, with several conditions about when the charge is to be repaid.

You could go down the DIY route, but it is not just a matter of taking one person’s name from the house; you and your husband will have to transfer the house into your name only.

See How do I transfer (sell or gift) my registered land or property?

Transferring property can be complex; if you have a mortgage on your property your lender might insist that you use a solicitor or conveyancer.
