What can I grow in Greenhouse in winter?

  • you can sew trays of perennials if you have a flower garden etc to save on plants next year - the trays don't need heat over winter and should give you lots of perennials to grow and swap for next year

The book came up with an answer while I was sitting on the toilet this morning.
Sow in September, carrot, lettuce, radish, endive, mustard and cress. Not sure if this is in a heated greenhouse or not. I think it presumes you keep the frost off it.

  • Wow, I have visions of nuns in a big hamster type wheel, heating the greenhouse! :rotfl:

    me too!! brilliant:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Or maybe nuns kneeling down and blowing into the greenhouse through a small hole.
Actually thats kind of disturbing :D

    Hi

Im off to buy a small walk-in greenhouse tomorrow:rolleyes:
I would like to grow potatoes in a tub on the floor of it...and tomatoes...carrots in tubs..that kind of stuff.
Are these ok to grow in a greenhouse this time of year? are there restrictions on things that shouldnt be grown in a greenhouse this time of year?

Boy am i glad that this board is here, i wouldnt have a clue where else to ask these questions!

    With thanks
    Heather

I think there are probably more gardening forums than any other type. The BBC Talk one is excellent. They have some annoying rules but a lot of the posters really know their stuff, but like most gardeners they can disagree. The other one I use is Allotments4All where there is a swop shop. Last year I received lots of chilli seeds, a rhubarb root and would you believe, four horseradish roots. I repayed the postage on that one although the lady did not want it but usually, for a packet of seeds, there is no point really. I sent lots of seeds too.

What would you rcmd i plant now in the greenhouse?

Its an nunheated greenhouse - but I could heat it if there were something growing in there worth heating it for.

My greenhouse is unheated too but last week I remembered a tip I heard or read for making it frost free - candles! I saw some really huge ones in Wilko or somewhere and we have a very thick tall glass vase that some flowers came in so I am going to use that for my candle. And then smaller candles will be put in jamjars or similar. Got a feeling this will work. I lost a few plants last year even though I cover with newspaper when there is frost. Also, like others we will line with bubbly wrap.

You've reminded me - I used to put a candle in with an upturned clay pot on top ( large one). The pot also warms up and keeps the heat a bit longer.
    ( don't have a greenhouse any more sob :( )

...there is a big empty space. I don't like seeing it empty. My toms are outside, my peppers are indoors (the GH isn't heated). What have you got in yours at the mo? What can I grow in it over Winter?
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.
