I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

What's changed now then ?0

No longer needing to renew SORN annually - it applies until you unsorn it
Other than NI, Insurance no longer will be checked when you tax your car0 -
So nothing worse then.0

So i can tax a car without insurance? But if uninsured it should be declared SORN and the disc returned?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Looks as if finally, and "improvement to the service they offer you" (not "a way of cutting their costs";)) actually does offer me an improvement
(Not that no insurance check paves the way for continuous VED by monthly standing order)I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Im thinking monthly payments will actually increase the management costs.
I wonder what % of failed direct debits they expect. How much to chase all those up?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

You must have insurance if its not SORNed, the change is that they simply wont check at the point of you buying the tax as they are now more systematically checking the MID and DVLA records to spot uninsured vehicles rather than relying on the once/twice a year event of you buying tax0 -

This means they can send you a fine by post.
This will clearly reduce the number of uninsured/untaxed vehicles on the road(not continually use Dangerous Criminals who actually bother registering their vehicle to their own address as cashcows, if they really wanted to reduce the number on the roads they only need direct operations to the hotspots that we all know about, and take extra care to keep out of the way of these vehicles if we drive through them;))

But this means if a vehicle needs to be used for a short time, it can be taxed & then a temp ins policy used. The system at the moment is overly complicated.0 -
True, but you miss the point of my rant, I can take you to areas in my locality where I would stake my pension that 5 out of 10 vehicles on the road are not correctly registered, taxed or insured, not to mention the driver doesn't have a licence in his/her own name. The injustice is that nothing ever gets done about them. (The cynic in me suggests that it is too much trouble and resource intensive, wheras people like myself, who take great pains to correctly register, tax and insure, end up with fines for the DVLA losing forms, accidentally parking in areas that are subject to residents permits etc, simply because my name & postcode suggests that I won't be a "difficult" case, as I have something to lose)I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
