Using a piece of old carpet may encourage him to scratch there. It won't cure the problem.

How tall is your scratching post?

I've found the taller the better. Mine is about 100cm... most of the ones from Pets at Home and what not are half that so the cat cannot stretch while scratching.

You can get larger ones from HERE (117cm tall) or HERE (80cm tall).
Alternatively you could get down to a local carpet seller, see if they have any carper inner tubes and create a ceiling cat tree. Grab some off cuts for the base, a bit of MDF. For the tree you could buy sisal rope (cat tree rope) or staple gun some carper around.

Well we put tinsel on yesterday, and i put some inverted sticky tape on two we didn't cover. He seems to be leaving well alone for now, but then most of his attention is currently focussed on the Christmas tree.

One night without scratching at the post is pretty good going though, hopefully it'll last!
