MSE News: E.on to hike energy prices by 3.7%

I use very little electricity and gas - I buy them both from E-on - because I live in a small house, am careful, have stepped up my loft insulation and wear plenty of clothing. Suddenly, I have two standing charges imposed on me where there was none before. To announce my bill is going up by £70 is breath-taking.
How do you justify this, as it has nothing to do with an increase in service to me, or increased supply of energy to me?
I don't think I can use any less energy than I do, nor afford to pay any more. Can anyone recommend an alternative supplier that does not impose standing charges under their recent new regimes? It's proving hard to find these details out.
Thank you if you can help.

    Hi Rachelconker

From 18 January 14, all our tariffs will have daily standing charges.

Previously, the costs that make up the standing charges were covered under our old two tier charging policy. This is where the first amount of kWh per quarter were charged at a higher rate.

These costs have always been charged but in a different way. Although, I do accept, low users may well see an increase in their overall charges.

Just a heads up Rachelconker. If you decide to move supplier because of these changes, we'll honour your existing arrangement until you switch. Provided, that is, your new supplier lets us know and the switch is completed within 6 weeks. Full details of this are included in the letter we've sent you.

Hope this is of interest. Let me know if you need any more details as will be happy to help.

At the moment (from memory), I get £30 of Tesco Clubcard Points per year through my EON tariff (due to usage, loyalty etc...)

So I will be moved from this and have to use EON Rewards instead? Where I get up to a maximum of £15 of Tesco Clubcard Points per year.

So if I stay with you for the year, I will get £15 of points (worth £60 in a Tesco 'boost'), as opposed to £30 of points (worth £120 in a Tesco 'boost')?

Am I also right in thinking that the EON Rewards are just a flat 1500 for the year, as opposed to anything based on usage, loyalty etc?

edit: I think I also currently earn points for each pound I spent with EON (or something like that?) Last few Clubcard statements shows:
1118 points from EON (August 2013)
1118 points from EON (November 2013)
889 points from EON (Current Statement)

I've always payed slightly over the odds for my fuel with EON but the Tesco points made it worthwhile... seems to make sense that I should just switch now though as I'll get naff all?

    Hi nvh

Our current Tesco Clubcard schemes end on 18 January 14.

As you say, these are being replaced with another type of arrangement. I confirm, on the new scheme, customers will receive a maximum of 1500 Tesco Clubcard points per year provided they take electricity from us and are on an eligible tariff.

The new scheme is optional, though. Customers will need to opt in to receive the points. This can be done online or by calling in.

Once opted in, points will be added to accounts each month.

Also confirm, going forward, this will be the only way to receive Tesco Clubcard points from us.

Hope this answers your questions nvh. Let me know if you need any more details as will be happy to help.
