Why do they only use low capacity (500 mah) in cordless phones, what happens if i use 1000Ma?

They'll probably last longer. A circuit will only draw as much power from the source as it needs, so having a higher power source just means it lasts longer.

The flip-side is ... if the circuit develops a short then the power source has more oomph to drive through that short, potentially leading to greater heat and a possible fire risk. At 1000 mAh though the increased risk is minimal.

You will find some good quality branded replacement rechargeable batteries on eBay from UK suppliers at a very reasonable price. Beware that there is also a load of rubbish so check their reviews before buying.

You will find the 1000 mAh give you much more talk time (which my partner makes full use of!)

    £££

There may only be a £1 or less difference between the cost of the lower and higher capacity batteries, but if the company concerned is selling thousands of phones a year, that £1 will soon add up.

As above. Manufacturers usually use the cheapest possible Chinese brand batteries. I usually end up replacing these with a decent brand within a year or two, as they're not made to last, and soon fail to hold their charge.

I've sometimes found the original batteries are very slightly shorter than the replacements. They will go in but take a hard push to get them in.
  • My Panasonic DECT which I purchased in 2000 was still using the original batteries that it came with up until I replaced the phone with a Gigaset VOIP/POTS model late last year.

I never had a problem with those batteries in all those years.
  • Been using replacement 1000mAH in our cordless phones for years, never had a problem. I used to get them from eBay, seller ITL-E, VAPEX branded, but he no longer lists them. Other sellers do. I also have a load of Vapex AA's which have given good service.
