I use AVG and it detected a virus called Startpage.18.AA but could not get rid of it. The virus has now slowed the computer that it takes nearly a minute to open a web page. I have tried to use stinger but that still could not get rid of it. Any ideas would be graetly appreciated.

you may need to go their and post your own details to get a fix if the safe mode thing does not work (sorry DVB...you replied as I did)
also try microsofts anti-spyare

First things first, download Kaspersky and give that a shot (run Windows in safe mode with networking).
If that doesn't fix it, click on Start/Run and type msconfig.exe.
Go over to the end tab and disable anything that doesn't look like it should be on there. It won't let you turn off anything important, so don't worry. You may have to ctrl-alt-delete and kill any processes you don't recognise (the second tab in task manager) before you'll be able to do this.Scott0
