Bought a bed online - rubbish mattress!

Hwoever if they are confirming the mattress as medium firm then they should be advertising it as such, anything else is misadvertising and in breach of the SOGA, regardless of whether the original description came from the manufacturer or not.I would disagree that they are confirming it is misdescribed - they are merely stating that technical ratings put it at soft to firm however in their opinion it is more like a medium.
As they pointed out, everybody has a different rating of firmness.. that is why I would never buy a mattress online.0 -

That's the very definition of misdescribed.
Their website says one thing. Their staff member says it's something else.0 -

So technical ratings call it "soft to firm" yet the retailer who is selling it states that in their opinion it is "definitely medium firm"
It can't be both "soft to firm" and "medium firm" at the same time, so someone somewhere must have the description wrong.
In other words, either the manufacturer or the retailer must have misdescribed the firmness of the mattress.0 -
To save the grief of this, have you tried the mattress with a topper for a few nights? It'll take the 'edge' off the hardness as it settles0

Apologies.. I misread the post. I thought the retailer was saying it was more medium but still classified as medium-soft. Ignore me.

The trouble with mattresses is that the whole firm, medium soft etc is so subjective.
What is Firm? Is it the floor? Or is that considered extra firm?
What is soft?
It also depends on body weight, what a little old lady crippled with arthritis and a 25 stone body builder needs is completely different.
We are all different weights, size and most importantly shapes.
To get proper support from a mattress you need a mattress that will "mould" around your body shape. To do that the mattress must "give".
How much it gives or is soft, medium, firm etc will depend on how big you are.
Most companies will describe their mattresses as either Medium or Medium/Firm as these are quite general terms. Also we have all been brought up wrongly I might add that soft beds are bad for us. So why describe a mattress as soft when you will hardly ever sell it.
Doctors used to prescribe rest and a hard bed for a bad back, now they say gentle exercise and a supportive bed. Not a firm one.
Only test that I have ever know come close to see if you have the correct mattress is to lie on your back and try to slide your hands under your lumber range. If your hands slide in really easily then the mattress is too firm. As they will be a hollow below you back therefore no support for the lower spine.
Conversely if you have trouble sliding your hands in, then the mattress is too soft.
Failing all of that, just buy a waterbed!

Thanks to all for your thoughts and advice!Much appreciated
Most of the reviews of the company say that their customer service is a nightmare, so I think I'd probably have a fight on my hands to try and get a refund/exchange without the charge; I'm going to pick up a topper tomorrow as suggested by paddyrg and see how that goes for a few nights!0
