Right To Buy Discount By Husband

Can anyone give me sum advice on this situation.

Husband bought a council house for his parents 30 years ago and now his wife and kids are buying their council house through rtb but on the form it says tell us if your partner ever got a discount.

The husband got it for his parents and signed himself out of the mortgage in due time and has never seen the money of course.

Any advice for this situation?

Was the discount in his parents name and he just supplied the cash for them or was he the actual tenant who got the discount?

they were the tenants and he bought it with them because he was living with them. he wasnt a tenant.

"He bought it with them" implies he WAS on the application for RTB / ownership of the property.

In which case he HAS benefited from the discount.
  • I think it unlikely he was able to go on the mortgage without being added to the RTB1 application as an established resident - in which case yes he has had the discount.

This would certainly be the case with current rules - and I don't think they have changed since the scheme was launched

  • but how do we go around it? if hes not part of the buying this time surely they shouldnt deduct it cos her partner received it. it was before they got married aswell

You answer the question correctly according to its specific wording. Anything else is fraud.
  • Who is the tenant of the house she wants to buy?

Your past posts suggest that you bought your parents house and your partner wants to buy her parents house.

Why not buy a house on the open market like everyone else has to.
Social housing is a scarce resource, not a means for tenants' children to get a whopping discount at the taxpayers expense.

It is just plain greedy and selfish.

And, given the opportunity, wouldn't you?

    You'd be stupid not to!
  • I don't get that if he wasn't the tenant and only lived with his parents, why did he get the discount, I can understand going on mortgage, to help it, but if he isn't a tenant then why would he get discount
