    No, you would be paying them for the privilege of issuing cards, cheque books and statements, maintaining online, telephone and mobile banking services, ATMs and debit card networks, indemnifying you against fraud committed against you using any of the above, staffing and maintaining up to thousands of branches to use at your convenience, processing standing orders and Direct Debits for you and clearing any cheques you choose to pay in, as well as accepting cash deposits and withdrawals.

    All of which you currently pay nothing for.

    Banking is like the Nhs, free at point of consumption but this doesn't mean that it's free.

    You pay for Nhs in taxation, you pay for banks in lower interest rates, high default fees and higher loan rates.
