ECP PCN - registration filled in not clear

Firstly, thanks to everyone who posts on here, what a great resource this is!!! I have been amazed at the amount and quality of info.
Just wanted a general opinion; I am chasing this down through the manager at the store where we parked. We bought a ticket, but ran over the hour, 16 minutes over got us the PCN. Problem is, we had a Xmas fair in the town and wanted to visit that first THEN we wanted to do some shopping in the store as we wanted cold stuff etc for a birthday party we were travelling directly to a little later. It was a good hour or so drive to the party, so we didnt want to buy stuff first and have it sitting in the car for an hour then another hour on the drive etc etc hence the intention to go in and shop as leaving. In fact we were so hacked off we never even bothered going in, went elsewhere to a competitor. Note we are REGULAR customers at the store and have been for years, our CC bills will prove it.
Anyways, I noted on the ECP PCN that, whilst the top sheet is correct, the bottom carbon copy payment slip has got the WRONG registration in the box - the muppet filling it in used a lower case letter with a subscript tail that sweeps below the box, so it is correct on the top copy, but the last character is different on the payment slip. It doesnt just look a bit different, it looks like a completely different letter (a 'v' instead of a 'y'). The tail is completely missing.
Does this in anyway affect or support my case if I have to challenge it through POPLA or whatever. As yet I havent had my NTK and am waiting for that before doing anything else. I was of half a mind to return the payment slip, having copied it of course, along with a photocopy of my cars reg on the V5 (other detail removed of course) and a photo of the cars reg plate, with a letter saying very sorry, the car to which this pertains is not mine, as you can see from your payment slip. Any mileage in that?
Cheers for any advice

Sorry, but please don't go down proven blind alleys with any mitigating circumstances (however much you feel aggrieved). Marginally incorrect details won't win you anything. You need to be better briefed on the real things that will get this PCN quashed for you, like:
1. Non genuine pre-estimate of loss
2. Signage
3. No Contract with landowner
4. Trespass
5. Unlawful Penalty Charge
6. Business Rates
7. ANPR Accuracy
These are what will kill this off for you. Look them up on the 'NEWBIES' thread on the forum index.
And definitely await the NtK which should reach you between 29 and 56 days after the parking event.
HTHPlease note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Many thanks for the clarification, I didnt think it would be of help, but hadnt seen anything as yet on the Newbies section covering this, mind you there is a LOT to read there. Will continue checking it all out and your list of fruitful avenues will be my guide.
Must admit I dont expect the appeal to the retailer to work, but remain hopeful.
cheers

PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
