H Samuel - Hourly Rates?

Hello,

My eldest has just started a Xmas temp job with H Samuel and they have asked him to work Boxing Day and NY.

His manager hasn't mentioned if he will be getting any extra for working those days and he is worried about travel costs due to no public transport etc.

Anyone here work for them and know what the Xmas temp normal hourly rate is and the Bank Holiday rate will be??

Not sure about HSamuel but I have worked Christmas temp jobs in retail in the past and never got paid any extra for these shifts. Its pretty much part of the package when u sign up for a "Christmas" job, I'd imagine.

  • Has he looked at his contract? Seeing these are both BH (not NY Eve though) it will tell him. Some companies will pay a BH rate, and some will give time in Lieu, some nothing at all.

As it is retail, his contract will stipulate that he is required to work BH.

My step-daughter works part time for H Samuel and they do not pay any extra for bank holiday working, nor do they give time off in lieu. They get NMW for all hours, nothing more.
Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............

Why bother applying for Christmas jobs if you don't want to work over Christmas?

It's not that OP's situation implies the person doesn't want to work, it implies they're somewhat worried that there will be limited/no transport to get to work other than taxi. The worry being that getting into work may mean it's not actually going to make much in terms of money after expenses are taken into account.

What I would say to the OP is that as it's a retail job it's always safest to assume it's NMW unless otherwise stated. It's also widely accepted that there's no extra for working on bank holidays, infact in my times as a christmas temp I've always thought it's been my job to cover them! (I know there's laws surrounding holidays & bank holidays, but lets be fair, you're highly unlikely to be there long enough to work the number of BH's it'd take for it to count against entitlement!)

Maybe a bit rash in my previous post, OP in most towns and cities public transport is available on boxing day and over new year. Is the job close enough to cycle to or could you give him a lift?
