Nationwide payment references

A nice simple question, or so I thought. I've been round the houses with Nationwide and gotten nowhere. Is the anyway to view payment references using the online banking system? Not the payee name but the reference sent with the payment. I have been told you can by Nationwide and now told that I cannot. For clarification this is for inbound payments and not outbound. Although seeing outbound references would be handy.
Their customer service so far has been terrible, I've had better with RBS of all places. Even Santander and that's saying something.

Blimey, doubt that'll last long.0 -
If by payment reference you mean the reference that is given by the payee when the payment is sent, then yes, you can see it on Nationwide, but not on the first transaction screen that you see online. Rather, you have to click on Full Statement where it appears as Description (or wait for the paper version). It appears to be limited to 18 characters for both incoming and outgoing transactions, except for debit card transactions - if I recall correctly it used to be possible to do two reference fields but I think FPS cut that to one (and even before that the second one was often impossible to see).0

I don't see anything for reference. I just get Bank Credit xxxxxx. There's no reference even if I set one. I was surprised that they weren't displayed, I've had them with Coop, RBS and Santander. This is the first bank I've been with that don't display it.
On a side note the graphing is now restricted to the 1st December onwards. I can't see my transactions in November. Also I got an email today telling me that my statement was available online, I login to be told "There are no statements available on this account for the selected time period.". I've not selected a time period!
Overall, I'm disheartened by their online banking.0 -

I can't totally follow what issues you appear to be experiencing with Nationwide's current accounts. Works like clockwork for me, and I have never not been able to identify what an incoming or outgoing transaction is about. I do, however, keep an independent record in MS Money of all my transactions since I would never rely on any bank (or building society) to have a complete record of my financial transactions.0 -

Payment references missing
Online statements broken
Online graphing is now broken/limited
Payment date ordering broken by default, setting it to chronological order solves this problem.
Unpredictable card reader usage (minor niggle)
I have also noticed a minor security issue, in that if you add a payee to the online banking it doesn't always ask for your card reader, waiting a few days you can make a payment to the payee using the mobile app.0 -
There are no payment references as you rightly say.
Statements all work as they should for me.
Don't know what online graphing is. I will have to investigate! Edit just tried it and it works for me
Haven't noticed anything peculiar with payment date ordering but maybe its not something I have looked at.
The need to use the card reader to set up new payees is random.
It is how the system is designed. I find I hardly ever have to use the card reader. I log in using memorable data not the card reader.0 -
Paul B., may be if Nationwide are so terrible, go back to the Coop, or to RBS, or Santander, all of whom seem to have been more to your liking. Nobody forces you to stick with any of them.
As it happens, I have current accounts with all of them (and some others) and in my books, Nationwide and Santander are both miles ahead of the Coop and of RBS, not only with their online banking.0 -
Hmm perhaps it is just me. I think the FlexDirect's restrictive methods of contact are also adding to the problem.
Graphing only shows from the 1st December, not the preceding month.
Statement is still missing, I have messaged them but they're slow to reply.
The payment dates when order chronologically work fine, when in reverse chronological order the dates are ordered correctly but the individual transactions during that day are displayed chronologically which makes following the balance/transactions confusing. As I say it's fine when both are ordered chronologically. Example: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s5/sh/158dd796-3a3f-4f29-a180-ce2418725127/096f266cccc757f561bfc6a652607d58
Santander were ok although their customer service is poor. The amount of products I have been given that I didn't want there is crazy. Extra current accounts, credit cards plus I do like 24 hour telephone support. Santander's online is much better than it used to be, I can remember the Abbey days! Coop are great although their online and mobile banking is terrible compared to the others. Unfortunately that's where I do most if not all banking now.0
