Real-life MMD: Should I claim for train delay?
Comments
-
I would claim, the suicide is irrelevant to the contract between you and the rail company, whose bid for the franchise included target arrival times and compensation for delays.
For anyone considering suicide in this manner...
It is incredibly selfish to commit suicide by lying or jumping in front of a train - the train driver is likely to be traumatised and many affected never drive a train again. Railway workers will be retching as they scrape your toes off the track 26 miles away (I have counselled several). Police have better things to do than photograph your skin and hair on the track. The chances are that, if you live, it will cost a million pounds to look after you for the rest of your disabled life. So, if you are suicidal, don't traumatise other people when you do it. Better yet, get help and live.0 -
Yes, claim your refund. It's not commonly known, but, I believe the Rail Companies can claim a refund for delays over 5 minutes, even though for passengers, the minimum is 30 minutes. If you don't claim it, the Rail Company makes even more profit.0

I tried claiming off my train company - Chiltern Railways - in this situation, but was told that they don't pay compensation in cases like this. Or if their trains are delayed or cancelled by bad weather, or if something hits one of their bridges, or if there is a fire. Basically, unless their train breaks, their passengers are very much on their own. If you can claim, I certainly would.0

Claim it!!! Then if you still feel bad you can pass the money onto me. :-)0

From a purely selfish point of view, I wish I'd known you could claim before. Twice I have missed expensive music concerts because "someone's been selfish and chucked themselves on train tracks" but I've had to take it as a fait a'compli and lost loads of money. while I have sypathy for people who feel this is their only exit, I really wish they'd think of the impact on strangers who are affected only because they take the same train.
On another point, I had a friend who didn't get to say goodbye to her mum (died of cancer) because she was delayed by someone who survived and said "I didn't want to die but it was the only my girlfriend would let me have a rat for a pet." Really - I wish those !!!!!! would consider the impact they have on strangers instead of just thinking of themselves . They are not the only ones with crap lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
No morality or dilemna problem here. Claim0
-
when this happens I always have second thoughts
morally it is wrong, but as someone has mentioned , think of all the other times that are less than 30 minute delays ( 30 minutes being the minimum delay you can claim for).
So I claim, plus there was a report recently about how much all these train companies have stashed sitting in an account waiting for people to claim.
I dont think this would have any effect on the train companies increasing the ticket prices - they just do that to repay the share holderssmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

To those people who have made disgusting comments about how selfish people are to jump under trains I hope you never have a family member who has fought depression for many, many years and finally gave up the battle this year. She did not want to die but really could see no other way out. They are NOT selfish, they are in total despair, if you can't say something nice, say NOTHING and keep your intolerant feelings to yourself0

Take the money as it's yours. The cause of the delay is irrelivant,i'm sure these companies are covered for this type of thing. What seems to bother you is your gaining through someone elses misfortune, then i have a solution for this.Give the person or their family the money,as for me i would keep it.0
