British Gas won't charge me?!!

Options
My partner and I have been in our first home since mid-July and we still haven't received a bill from British Gas. They are our suppliers for both Gas & Electricity.
Every month, for 5 months now I have called them, given our meter readings and our direct debit details and each time they say they will send a bill... but still nothing!
I'm currently putting away £80 a month (2 of us, in a 2 bed flat and we're not usually home in the day) Is that enough? Should I switch even though we don't know how much we are paying? Am I likely to be landed with a huge bill?
Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Switch anyway, you'll probably find a good deal, and it might buck up British Gas. If you don't know what tariff you are on it is unlikely to be the best one.

Write a letter to the labelled 'Complaint' detaling all the contact (date & time) you have made and the meter readings and ask them why you have not received a bill. Have you even received a 'welcome pack'?

  • No, we've had no welcome pack - i don't even have a customer reference number, which when calling them makes it very difficult to get through to anyone!

Have you tried putting this in writing to their Head Office (then at least you have a copy of your complaint!).

How do you know that British Gas are the suppliers? Is it a new build or were they the exisiting suppliers?

without a reference number looks like you don't have an account setup...
  • They were the existing suppliers. We rang them on the day we moved in to give them the meter readings and payment details and apart from us calling them every month - we just haven't heard from them.

After reading these posts, i will most certainly put in a complaint and then switch suppliers.

I'm not expecting to get away with it, but i don't want to be landed with a bigger bill than what I've been putting away for. On the first phone call they advised it would be £78 a month, so that's what i've been putting by, but i have no proof now that they said this.

You have the meter readings from July, take a reading now and you can easily work out how much the bill would be to date. If you use BG standard tariff details (the most expensive) then that should be the max.

never judge the £78 a month to be right (soo many other posters think this is a 'All you can eat' payment... - try to use the readings you have to work out an accurate Kwh usage - then pence per Kwh & daily standing charge to work out what you have used..
