Blue Badge Parking

Options
I have been told by Blue Badge holders that they can park in 1 hour free spaces for an unlimited time without penalty. Does anyone know if this is correct?

  • I think so but I don't agree with it.....
  • That is correct

    see here
NO MORE HANDWASH GLITCHES PLEASE :D:D
  • Thanks JulieElizabeth, and this is the relevant sections

badge holders may park free of charge and without time limit at on-street parking meters and on street 'pay and display' equipment unless a local traffic order specifying a time limit for badge holders is in force. (Check local signs for information)
badge holders may be exempt from limits on parking times imposed on other users. (Check local signs for information)

The first section doesn't apply in my town as there are no meters or on-street pay and display.
The second section says ""MAY" be exempt", in circumstances in which I think I may be parking, that is, Parking spaces limited to 1 hour between 8am and 6.30pm.
That leaves room for doubt, which could be a costly £90!!!

Which Bit??, the "unlimited" time span or the "free of charge"

The 1 hour spaces are there for the convenience of everyone not just blue badge holders and are there to provide spaces for those wanting to quickly nip in and out of shops or businesses.. Makes them pointless if they can be used for "all day parking" by a select few of the population (or in the case of Northern Ireland a select LOT!)
    And then..... Why Free?
Are the Unemployed on JSA allowed to park for Free?
Are Mothers on Maternity Leave allowed to park for Free?
Why should Blue Badge holders get it for free, they already get the car subsidised for, why free parking on top of it??

Where on earth did you get the idea that all Blue Badge holders get their car subsidised?

Sweeping generalisation. apologies on that one, just from experience most of those I know of who have Blue Badges get some form of DLA also !!

That aside though, still don't agree with the parking point. fair enough if they wanted to extend the hour to maybe 2 for blue badge holders but not unlimited!

Friends son has bad cerebral palsy ,they had to get a dla car as they couldn't have afforded one with a special ramp etc , as his wheelchair is one of the ones that has head support on it. When I watch how much she goes through just to take her son out for a while I find it extremely difficult to deny her anything.I have seen it take 20-30 mins getting her son out of the car ,so if she wants to park longer than an hour who am I to say anything.Sill

There will always be "Exceptions" be it those who "genuinely" requirethe time/money and those who "take the pi.ss"

It's just a case of what is the purpose of these parking areas and how should they be managed. From what I am led to believe they are there for the "quick turn around" on the main town/city streets. if someone with mobility issues needs a bit of extra time.. ok give them "double time" i.e. 2 hrs rather than one... But Unlimited and Free !!

I think my friend would always rather park in a disabled space as they usually have more room for car and wheelchair, but a lot of times they are being used .I don't know by who and couldn't say whether they are taking the"****"or not.She parks where her sons blue badge allows her to.In Belfast city centre she parks as close to the shops as she can ,as sometimes her son fits and this enables her to get him home quicker.Wouldn't want to tell her because theres no disabled parking available that she has to pay and is only allowed to park for two hours. Just glad I don't walk in her shoes any of the time. Sill
