Hong Kong accommodation required - any advice?

hi - I'm based in China at the moment and it's easy for me to get a flight to Hong Kong, so I'm planning a trip in January. However, I'm wondering if anyone can help me with accommodation. I normally stay in hostels in China, albeit in private rooms. Could anyone recommend a decent hostel or hotel for a single female traveller?
I'm also wondering how long to go for - 5/7 days seems enough, I want to visit museums and historical sites rather than shopping and I get get all the information I need from the internet - is that a decent length of time to include trips and is there anything that anyone would specifically recommend that I do/see.
Thanks in advance.

It's fun to stay at the YMCA
Seriously! The Salisbury is lovely, central, has a pool and we could see the harbour from our room. Walking distance to the subway and Star Ferry. Rates are very reasonable for location and facilities.
Trip length sounds about right. The Peak tram, going up the Sky Tower and Big Buddha were our top 3 - but we were travelling with 2 under 8s, so our time was spent very differently. Not sure Ocean Park will be on your agenda like it was on ours!Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

I enjoyed a visit to Lantau Island. Had hoped to go to Macau as well but as both times I've been to HK it was Chinese New year all the ferries were full.
Sorry can't help with hostels.0 -
My first visit was for 14 days, and it was not a second too long! As well as the museums and the bits of history and culture there are national parks and wilderness areas; fishing villages and seaside resorts... in many ways there is a lot more of China (in a positive sense) to see in Hong Kong than in the mainland.
The Salisbury YMCA is exquisite and good value for money: another way of putting that is that it is rather expensive for someone on a limited budget. If that is the area you want then check out Mirador Mansions on Nathan Road, which contains many tiny and spotless hotels. Alternatively, look for somewhere on one of the islands (Lamma is peaceful and beautiful, just 45 minutes by boat from Central).0 -
We also stayed at the Salisbury, try to get a room high up the view is fab. We also visited all the places mentioned and had a fab time the time frame sound good to me as well.0

Thanks for your suggestions - the Salisbury looks perfect but it's not available for the dates I'm going to be in Hong Kong unfortunately :-( I'm wanting to go for some of the historical side to the city, so Ocean Park won't be on my list of things to see although it does actually look fun!0
