Zavvi - why?

Options
Wasnt sure where to post this.

Ordered an Ipad2 from Zavvi on Friday. They say that would dispatch within 24 hours. Now I know it was the weekend so assumed Monday - nothing. On Tuesday I sent an email via their website asking when to expect delivery. They have replied asking me to send a copy of a utility bill with my name clearly shown, I can post this or send it via email.

Why?

Probably something has flagged on their system (new customer, credit flag raised etc.) or it could be down to their previous experience. So they need to confirm that you are who you say you are. Arguably it is responsible trading reducing the risk of them being ripped off.

Surely the best people to answer that would be Zavvi, wouldn't it?

they often do this if your credit card is registered to a different address to your delivery address.
    good for them, reducing crime.

All sorted - cancelled the order.

Did indeed contact Zavvi but they wouldnt tell me why.
Existing customer and the registered address is the same as the delivery address.

And a quick google about shows that this is most common place and usually means they are awaiting stock!

It doesn't mean they are awaiting stock.

Something about you, your order or your card has flagged a warning on their system. The normal zavvi customer service wouldn't know why. You need to escalate it up to their fraud/credit team if you are that interested.

John Lewis throw in a 2-yr guarantee on an Ipad 2 if you're still looking to buy one.

Ebuyer are known to do this also.

Going by what the OP says, about being an existing customer and the address matching the card, it looks like they are mucking them about unnecessarily, so I'd too buy elsewhere.

I'd consider not buying from the company again.

I'd cancel too. Not because they have fraud detection methods in place, nor that they want information but simply because they couldn't be bothered to tell the OP until he/she queried when the order would arrive.

Is it the first time you've ordered something big/expensive from them?

IIRC a lot of companies selling high value, easily sold tech tend to do this from time to time, especially if you've never bought something expensive from them before, or have only placed a couple of previous orders.

It's usually down to how they're covered for fraud, or if they have had a lot of problems with fraud in regards to a particular item or area (a copy of ID, or proof of address such as a utility bill is often used because it helps cover them a lot with regards to CC fraud).

I've had to do it a few times with different retailers, including sometimes two or three times over the space of several years if I've changed my CC (sometimes using a new CC/CC number will trigger the fraud prevention measures again).

It's mildly annoying, but no where near as bad as having to get my cards replaced (again), because someone has managed to use my CC number at a retailer who didn't do all the normal checks.
