Recommend a mobile repairer or body shop

Options
Unfortunately, my car got keyed on Saturday. I'll let the photo do the talking...

Would a mobile repairer be able to fix this? If not, could you recommend a reliable body shop? I'm in the Neath area (South Wales).

  • Or is there a scratch repair kit available? Surely there's a way of building up layers of paint with the point of a cocktail stick, flattening the paint, then adding lacquer and polishing it? I used a Mer scratch repair it a few years ago and it seemed very good.

From your experience, could you kindly explain why it will need a respray?
  • The area that has been keyed looks as though it has gone through the laquer and into the paint. The car paint being metalic, is made of normally 3 coats 1. Primer 2. basecoat (color) and 3. clear laquer. If the scratch has gone deeper than the laquer coat, then this will mean that a good repair cannot be gained unless the whole panel is sanded down and totally re-painted. In many cases to get a near color match! it may be required to re-paint the whole side of the car! Color matching can be very difficult due to age of paint and natural fading! Many of the mobile repairers use several different techniques to provide a good repair, however a deep scratch/keyed gouge, may need a bodyshop condition repair. Hence the costs involved. Car paint and materials are no longer a cheap buy nowadays! hope this helps!
  • I've shopped around for a few approximate quotes:

TWK Thomas, Swansea: £160. Could be done in a day.
AWL Car Body Repairs, Swansea: £230. 1-2 days.
    RGM, Swansea: £300-£400 shocked.gif. 3 days.
    Trick & Aubrey, Neath: £170. 1-2 days.
Carsmetics: Unable to repair. Recommended a body shop to do the work.

All of the above body shops said the whole panel and door will need to be resprayed to blend everything properly.

If the side of the car is resprayed, will the colour look different to the rest of the car?

Well, you pays your money and takes your choice. I know the, excellent, body shop near me would charge £300+ and take at least two days over it. The work they've done for me has been faultless.

If the whole side of the car is sprayed it may still notice but it depends how much the original paint has faded.

What car is it and how old?

The paint should match pretty well then. I had a new door on my 2009 Mazda2 last year and it matches perfectly.

I think that whole side of the car would need washed over to prevent an obvious panel mismatch and that's going to be around £400. Then again, unless you know the keyer is locked up, why not use Blue T-Cut Colour and a bit of elbow grease and see how that looks.
  • get onto a detailer, it looks bad but it doesn't appear to be down to metal, its a white streak witch means laquer is still present.

1200grit wet paper, ferracla g3 compounding paste, elbow grease or rotary buffer. should see most if not all disappear.
