"And partnerships? Do they have a national insurance number?"

Nope they don't. So require partnerships ONLY to have a separate number, everyone else can file on their NI number.

Think outside the HMRC box, then type.

I file such things as PDFs because I get about 30 or 40 e-mails per day. I have special directories for each PDF I may later need to rely on if HMRC muck stuff up. It's quite common across all taxes, so it's nice to just pull the PDF out from the relevant directory, send it off to HMRC by post or e-mail and tell them to get lost with their fines. (Yes some parts of HMRC deal with you by e-mail, sorry folks it is just for agents but hopefully at some point HMRC will decide to join the 21st century.)

Whilst your post is sensible compared to some others in this thread, in my view the answer was to tidy up the NI numbers and not start a whole new system which HMRC could muck up.

I've had several cases of mixed UTR numbers, over time the UTR numbers will become just as messy as the NI numbers because it is the same incompetent people who are running the system, who think 6 to 8 weeks is OK for issuing the numbers in the first place.

This sounds a bit of a nightmare!

My son is going for an interview this week and if he is successful he will need to register as self-employed.

Given that it seems to be taking quite some time for these to be issued, will the lack of a UTR number have any immediate implications for him and if so does anyone have any advice/suggestions of the best way to go about registering for this please?

I have seen a company called Simpletax advertised online who I believe for an annual charge of £49 will deal with this and your tax return for you, or are they just a waste of time and money?

    :(

I have this feeling that the NI system might be beyond repair.
I sent off for a pension forecast and when I got it I realised that a whole year of my contributions had "gone missing".
So I wrote back with chapter and verse from my extensive records :rotfl:
and promptly got a "found it" letter. Methinks someone said "It looks like he knows what he is taking about" - put him down for a full pension.
  • Anyone successfully received a code? I'm going to give them until 2nd Jan then start the process of phone/twitter/facebook complaints

We'll be chasing up with a letter of complaint on 4 Jan - the likelihood of HMRC calling to go through the registration process on the phone before them looks less likely than Santa actually visiting tonight!!!! Ho, ho, ho.

I also received my UTR this morning although I'm not convinced it is because I requested it online for the second time on 05-Dec

The confirmation email stated I would receive form SA250. I can't see that reference anywhere on the letter i have received.

    The letter actually states

'we are sending you this letter because you recently contacted us to register for SA, or we have looked at your circumstances and would like you to complete a SA tax return'

Apparently there is a further letter to follow and I will have at least 3 months from the date of issue to complete the return.

Anyway I have now successfully registered online and await my activation code.........:undecided

Hey us too, a paper tax return to complete but with that all important UTR number printed on front.

The tax office Cinderella must have been told she won't go to the NY ball if she didn't clear that backlog of UTR requests!!!
