I have managed to buy myself a cheap little second hand car.
My partner works away and was meant to be home tonight but isn't going to make it. The car is being delivered this evening and I haven't the foggiest idea what I am meant to check or do when buying a car!
My other half normally takes care of anything like this so I am in desperate need of someone with a little knowledge to let me know what I need to do!
I haven't a clue what paperwork I need to get from them or what. I am terrified that I will end up buying it then it will be reported stolen or something stupid like that!
Any advise would be gratefully received!
Lol - not very often do I have to pull the feeble female card but with anything to do with cars, I'm pretty much useless!

It's the right place, and welcome to MSE.
Are you buying privately or from a dealer? I Presume it's a dealer since you talk about delivery.
Have you already checked over the car prior to buying, and just want to ensure you get the right paperwork etc. or are we talking a full check like does it run and/or is is safe?0 -
You say you've bought it and it's being delivered? Then isn't it too late to check over?
Make sure you have the owner's document which I think is called the V5 form - this will be signed by the old owner and now you, and then it's sent off to the DVLA to say the car has a new owner, but your other half can do this, it's not urgent.Spend what is left after saving. Thankyou!
No it's a private sale - it was all arranged by my other half and he has sorted out all of the financial side of it... so I won't be handing any cash over, but need to make sure that I have all of the right documentation.
I have only recently moved up here and don't really know anyone I can ask up here and my other half is away on the rigs so I can't get hold of him again now until when he's finished tonight at about 11pm by which time the car will have already been delivered. The seller has been paid for delivering it to me - I have 2 month old twins and can't drive just yet following a botched C-Section.
Does it run and is it safe is not something I am worried about - my partner has viewed the car and he's happy with it.
It's more, what documentation I need to make sure I get with it.0 -

Sorry, I should have made it more clear - it's what documents I need to make sure I get that I am more concerned about.0 -
The V5 document.
The seller will have this and needs to fill out an area, just make sure that's done and that's it.Spend what is left after saving. Don't save what is left after spending0 -
The main thing is filling in the V5 (logbook) with your details and ensuring that both you and the seller sign it. The seller should then detach the V5/C new keeper suppliment...
...and give it to you. They are then supposed to post off the rest of the V5, though many just give you the whole thing to deal with yourself. Technically you aren't supposed to do that but so long as they have signed the bit that says they're selling the car to you it really isn't a problem.
That V5/C serves as proof of being the registered keeper while the rest of the paperwork is with the DVLA. You'll need it if you want to tax the car at a post office or if you get a producer from the police.
If you have not yet arranged insurance for the car, ensure that they deliver it to an off road location (e.g. your driveway) and don't leave it on the street.0 -
As well as any service history and receipts both you and the seller have to make sure the V5C is completed correctly. Your details will go in to Section 6 and both the seller and you will sign Section 8. Your details will additionally go in to Section 10, which the seller will tear out and give to you (little green slip). The seller will then take the rest of the V5C away and post of to DVLA.
Is the car insured? When it becomes yours responsibility for its insurance becomes yours straight away, more problematic if its sitting on the public road.0 -

That is fantastic! Thanks so much for your help! I thought there would be tonnes of paperwork to have to fill in and complete etc and was getting a little stressed about it! Phew!
I have arranged insurance for it so I don't need to worry about that!
I can't believe all there is to do is sign a bit of paper and it's done!
Just out of interest, what if they didn't send their bit off to the DVLA? What would happen then? (Sorry for the 20 questions, am a sleep-deprived, hormonal and now it would appear, paranoid crazy-lady! :exclamati:female:0 -
You need to see the V5C registration document there are several tear off sections, the seller needs to fill in the change of ownership details in section 6 and 10 then you both sign at the bottom in section 8, they tear section 10 off and you keep it as proof of ownership they then send the remainder off to the DVLA.
In about a months time you should get the registration documents in your name from the DVLA.0 -
If they don't send it off (or they do and it goes missing in the post) then eventually you'll need to contact the DVLA in writing and then there's a bit of a faff while they contact the previous keeper.
Remember though, the V5 document just proves who the registered keeper is, not who owns the car. I am presuming that since your husband has handed over cash that he already has a receipt.
The seller may ask you to sign a thing to say he delivered it.
I guess the only other thing I'd want to check is that it is the same car0
