At least we now have some facts to work with.
Eon meter reader turned up EXACTLY-TO THE MINUTE- when agreed (SO impressed).
I now know how to check readings (not as obvious as you might imagine) and the lady from Eon followed up, again AS AGREED!!! with a phone call this afternoon.
I have to say that if this is how good they now are at customer service then I shall seriously consider going back to them next month when my current deal ends as efficient and courteous service is worth hard cash to me.

We have had confirmation from EON this week that my parents readings were indeed transposed. The result of this is that they are actually in credit rather than owing hundreds of pounds! Their experience of customer service has been very good, however they are not happy to have been put through the worry and lost interest on money which belonged to them....apparently this stems from 2008! Thanks so much for your help with this..
