cooker faulty in rental house

we moved into our rented house 2 months ago. on sunday the cooker just died when it was on (dual fuel, electric oven gas hob). the gas works fine but no electrics. the socket on the wall doesn't light up and the trip switch didn't blow so either a faulty socket or cooker. I reported it to the agent first thing yesterday at 9am, and they said an electrician will be in touch. still not heard anything today. how long should I give them? im nervous that with xmas approaching if the cooker is faulty and beyond repair a replacement supplied and fitted before xmas will get more challenging with every day that passes. how long do agents/landlords allow for these things usually?

Well it's not the end of the world as you still have the hob.

But just to be sure, put your report in writing and post it to the landlord at the address on the tenancy agreement.

Contractors can take a few days to arrange if it's not urgent
  • you are right we have a hob, however the Christmas turkey is likely to be a challenge to cook on the hob I would imagine
  • and lasagne got very messy indeed when I tried to roast it on the gas

I'd say a week or so would be an acceptable time to wait for an electrician. Unless your agent is downright terrible I'd be amazed if it took them 3 weeks to call a competent sparky.

Waiting one working day and then panicking is a bit off. It is not an emergency and electricians are a finite resource.

  • im not panicking, im trying to forward plan, I have worked for electrical retailers in the past and know that at this time of year xmas delivery install is tight and I also know the cooker we have is likely to be a challenge to find parts for. im trying to be cautious nothing else. and its not 1 working day, its 2. in that time I would expect a call to be honest
