Anyone got a Garmin Nuvi 300? can't get sound unless I plug in Charger

I am new to sat nav.
I finally chose garmin nuvi 300 as per recommendation on Which. However I can only get the sound on for directions if I plug it into the charger in my car first. When I take the charger off and leave it on battery power the sound remains until I turn it off. However the same problem occurs next time I turn it on.
Is this right or have I got a faulty unit.
