is there a new renting fee?

I've noticed on some listings an asterix by the monthly rental price and then a message below saying the agent will charge a fee of 14 days rent.
is this a new thing? or maybe a different way of charging for something they did anyway?
are they making renting more difficult? if someone could explain the charges when you rent that would be appreciated. I always thought it was just a month and half deposit up front, nothing else.

It sounds like some agents are chancing their arm.0

May be to do with the recent change in regulation. I'm not able to post a link but search for "letting agents must advertise fees" and news articles come up, including one from MSE. I think the change took effect in November.
So they are still fleecing you but at least they have to let you know what to expect.0 -
It's new regulations on advertising, all fees which a tenant will need to pay must be stated up front on all adverts.0

should they also have to say on the advert you need a deposit of a month and a half?0

We had to pay half a months rent in LA fees, plus a month and a half deposit, this was 19 months ago and we weren't told about them until after we had paid the non refundable deposit, with our rent at over £1k a month this was a sizable amount, we were gutted we didn't find out before.0
