Compensation for bank meltdown

Well as most of you are aware, RBS/Natwest/Ulster encountered a further meltdown last night on what they say is the busiest online shopping day of the year (not sure why December 2nd specifically?)

It is announced this morning that RBS will compensate anyone left 'out of pocket' due to their error.

Even though Online Banking now seems to be working, peoples accounts are still not 100% accurate.

For example, I had £152.78 credited to my account yesterday, today this is not showing on my statement and my balance is -£114.45 so therefore cannot access any of my money, leaving me 'out of pocket'.

I'm sure there will be a further announcement soon, especially regarding compensation which I will certainly be going for, but I do hope accounts start to see some cash getting credited soon as the longer it goes on, the more expensive it is going to be for RBS/NW/Ulster!

How was the £152.78 credited? Are you saying it was on your statement but has now been removed?

I wouldn't hold my breath for any further announcements about compensation, or any big compensation. You need to phone them or call into a Branch to discuss your claim. If you haven't see what RBS said officially, it is on the BBC website.

Yes it was on my statement yesterday, I then transferred it to another account I have for the bills to be paid, and today it is showing that I have sent money over to my secondary account but it is not showing that it has come in originally, therefore leaving my balance in the minus.

I rang customer services today who just said the problem is ongoing, systems are gradually coming back up, please keep checking my account etc etc and charges will be reimbursed etc etc...

Looking at articles from when this happened last time, £125m was paid out in compo with some people claiming up to £300 for being out of pocket and for embarrassment at the checkouts etc... doubt the compo for a case like mine would be anything near though.

    So what are your losses?

The losses is the fact that I am now in a minus position on an account that doesn't have an authorised overdraft and will probably incur charges which I believe they have agreed to re-imburse for customers anyway, but being in this position prevents me from accessing any moneys available because it is not available, it is the inconvenience of not having access to any money more than anything.

    You're entitled to nothing.

NatWest will remove all charged for being in an unauthorised overdraft. You will get no interest as the current account does not pay interest, but if you did, it would be a few pennies.

If you've called them, they may reimburse you the cost of the call, however they've released free numbers to sort any problems out, so I doubt you'll get anything from that.

Being embarrassed because your card was declined is not worthy of compensation. I'd recommend some thicker skin. Much worse things happen to people than looking a little red because their card got declined.

NatWest should put you in the position you were in should the meltdown not have happened. In your case, they should remove all charged and the payment should show up soon. Apart from that, you're entitled to nothing.

Was you hoping to come here and everyone advise you that you're entitled to £300 for being slightly out of pocket for a day or two?

If they have c0cked up your account, of course you should not pay charges ... but that isn't what you said in your earlier post.

    1) They'll reimburse all of the charges.
    2) They'll allow you to spend the £38.33 that you would have been entitled to if the technical problem had not occurred, just ask them.

I don't see why you should be given compensation? Its not like your mortgage payment bounced and the bank has submitted a court order for a repossession.
  • RBS have just paid £220 into my account due to the meltdown. I'm quite pleased with this. They initially tried to offer me £170 but I refused; they then upped the offer. You don't ask you don't get. My aunty was offered only £25, which she has refused and they have told her they will get back to her in a week.
