iPad 2 is now 2 and a half years old, whereas the iPad Air is upto date, so if you really want an iPad, pay the extra £70 and get an upto date machine.

For the sake of £70, I would go with an Air. The processor difference and the screen quality are big factors.

Also, the Air is a lot lighter. Personally, I think I'm getting me a iPad Mini 2 with Retina over the first generation Mini. Also about £70 difference between the two.
  • Given that the iPad Air has the A7 chip from the iPhone 5S, there’s no doubt it will be a storming performer. Indeed, I could tell in my short hands-on time with the Air that it was amazingly slick regardless of whether you’re swiping between home screens or playing the latest 3D games or apps.

By contrast, the iPad 2’s A5 processor is around 4x slower by Apple’s own admission. Graphics performance is 8x slower, meaning that the latest apps don’t run as well or look as good as on the iPad Air.

whichever one i get its actually a gift for someone who's techie knowledge stretches to only just being able to use a samsung galaxy 11, but seems to enjoy learning about internet etc.

+1 to go with the Air. I've just suggested the same for a colleague. He has his now and is over the moon.

The resale value alone in a few years time will probably return you the £70 over an iPad 2. Plus games etc in a year or two will assume a decent processor.

Personally, I have a "2" and it is great for everything I need it to do (accepting that the camera on the 2 is awful, but I never use it), but the price difference is too small to make the economising worthwhile.
    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.
