Written offer v verbal offer

Is there any difference between placing an offer:

a) Verbally
b) In writing

I assume that you are still not tied whatsoever if you do it in writing? For example, if I wanted to pull out then this is allowed.

I do not intend to pull out. I just want to make sure that by putting it in writing I am not binding myself legally before exchange.

    There are differing views on this. If you offer in writing, add the magic words 'subject to survey and contract', which will make the offer as good as a verbal one. There are some templates out there and some advice - particularly about 'justifying the offer' which tends to be terribly misinterpreted particularly by people new to the process of buying. Basically the less you say about the house and the less you comment on its condition or location or whatever, the better. If your position as buyer is good, well mention that in the offer - eg mortgage acceptance in principle, no property to sell etc.

    But overall, offer verbally unless the process is explicitly 'offers in writing'
    You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
