  • Unless the college has an access to learning fund that he could tap into, I doubt he'll get any money :(

And even then I doubt he'd be eligible for the fund because the course is available to you closer to where you live - so in the colleges eyes there would be students who need the money more - e.g. this college is the closest to said student and they can't afford to get there.

But no, he is not eligible for Student Finance England, the kind that is paid to University students in the UK.

I doubt whether there would be funding unless the college offers bursaries for high achievements etc. There are few state run boarding colleges (at least for mainstream students) - is this an independent college? If so, the fees tend to be expensive and aimed at students from the independent school sector.

My friend has recently gone through this with her son who has gone to Horticultural college. They weren't able to get financial help either because as said it is for University education. My friends employer offers a scheme to help those with kids studying but again only for University students. The fees were means-tested but at a joint income £10k less than yours they weren't eligible for any reduction. They've just had to tighten their belts in order to make it possible. They looked into the cost of commuting verses the cost of boarding and boarding came out cheaper, especially since an amount to eat in the colleges canteens is included in the price. I think it's £30 loaded to his card to cover the price each week towards any meals for the 4 days he is there, which is probably less than he was eating at home for the same duration so work out your costings on what you will also save by him not being at home and what is included at college.

Friend's son got a summer job in a garden centre prior to going and saved half to pay for any extras that came up, like trips out etc with college.
