Lowell Portfolio chasing apparent t.mobile debt

Today I came home to discover a debt collection letter from Lowell stating I owed a debt of £39.02 from EE limited, formerly T.mobile. I was totally confused as I am with EE and all payments are done via direct debit. I contacted them straight away and it turns out it is a debt from 2008 when I had a t.mobile internet dongle. Again that would have been done via DD so I still don't understand why I owe this money. Lowells bought the debt in November of this year and hence sent a letter chasing said debt. I am dumbfounded as this is the first I have heard of having an outstanding debt and in 2011 I ran a thorough credit check with Experian before taking out a new mobile contract with Orange (now EE!) and nothing was flagged up at all. I became concerned I had been scammed so googled the company and came across some threads on this site saying that people have had issues with this company running unauthorised credit check searches and also setting up regular payments. I had paid the amount owing whilst on the phone but after reading some comments I contacted my bank and blocked the possibility of taking any future payments. By doing so I believe I have inadvertently cancelled the payment so no doubt will receive a stinky letter soon. I will be going through all my old bank statements to check all payments to T.mobile went out and will pay any outstanding balance but wanted to know has anyone else had this problem, and why it has taken 5 years to chase this up?! Any advice on how to approach this?

Hi there,
Never pay before getting proof.

This company buy old debts, hard to collect and would have no issue in chasing the wrong person.
