Aldi's dvd recorder

Not being an ultra-techie, is the dvd recorder going on sale in Aldi on Thursday morning worth £109.00. On the site it seem to do everything. Will the prices come down much more / Any advice appreciated.

Well, it's certainly a badged player. You could reasonably expect it to be a similar quality to an LG equivalent - however without a model number it's a bit tricky to find any more info.

I'd say the £100 DVD Recorder is well on it's way. PC based recorders are going for around £35+vat, so it's just a matter of time.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Asda in Aberdeen are selling one for £99, aparently it got 4 out of 5 from What Hi-Fi? magazine. The make is 4kus, had a look on their internet site and it seems to be only in Aberdeen.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

I have been looking for a DVD recorder for about a year now without settling on any one, however went out last night with the intention of looking at the Aldi one to see if it looked any godd or if there were any left and ended up buying the well reviewed Asda one for 100 pounds in Dunfermline.

The 4kus-230 is indeed a rebadged for Asda/Wallmart Liteon as can be seen on the sticker at the back and the poor english in the instructions.

I obviously haven't had a chance to do a lot with it yet and be warned, I only really need it for three specific things:

    1. To dump stuff from my Sky+ box
    2. To transfer Analogue video to dvd
    3. To transfer my mini dv camcorder to DVD.

What I have found so far:

    1. It looks pretty good - much better than the Liteon 5045 that I was thinking about
    2. Very easy to setup and use - guider button would even allow my 80+ Granny to use it.
    3. Accepts all media I have thrown at it - Arita Ritek G05's and the free RW that came with it. (ok both of them!!)
    4. Automatically starts recording at the end of the current DVD
    5. Easy to edit titles
    6. adds chapters - set 10 5, 10, 15 min, etc

    Features:

Dolby digital and DTS - does not decode though, only has dig o/p's
    Two scarts - 1 in, 1 out
Dv (firewire) in on the front
Analogue in on the front (R W Y)
    comp out (Y, Cb, Cr)
    opt out
    dig coax out
    RF aerial in/out
    Analoge out (R W Y)

Plays DVD +/- R/RW, CDR, MP3, JPG, VCD, SVCD

Records DVD +R/RW (RW do not have to be finalised)

Four settings 1,2,4 and 6 hours - I have used 2 and 4 so far and have had a quick scan but not really watched them yet - look ok and audio sync is acceptable.

    1,2 and 4 use mpeg 2 - normal dvd

    6 uses mpeg 1 - don't think I'll ever use this.

    Region free hack easily available

    Auto scan for analogue TV/Sky

Easy to program to record - if you want to.

Seems to start recording pretty quickly without any undue delay

    Cons:
Not as intuitive as it could be - remote control wise although I have only had it for a few hours.

    Instructions not great

DVD+ Only, no big deal, I have a PC for editing and reburning

Hope this helps someone - don't know why I waited for so long to buy one, maybe it was the 100 pound barrier that broke me?
